【REPORT】Sea Vegetable's Seaweed in Panasonic HD Employee Cafeterias

On November 26, 2024, Panasonic HD began offering Sea Vegetable's seaweed in the employee cafeteria at its Kadoma headquarters. This initiative is part of Panasonic’s broader efforts to address societal challenges such as biodiversity conservation, food security, health maintenance, and CO2 reduction, through innovative use of seaweed.

On November 15, 2024, Panasonic HD entered into a joint demonstration agreement with Sea Vegetable to explore the potential of solving societal challenges through seaweed farming. This partnership leverages Panasonic’s expertise in robotics, IoT, and technology to enhance seaweed cultivation, aiming to reduce environmental impact and stabilize food supply.

Before this official offering, a tasting session was held in March 2024 at Panasonic HD, and with the help of Aem Service Co., the meal offerings featuring seaweed were finalized. The company plans to expand this offering to other cafeterias in Japan in the future.

Through the provision of Sea Vegetable's seaweed in the employee cafeteria, Panasonic HD aims to raise awareness among its group employees about the current issues of biodiversity loss in Japan's marine areas and the challenges facing the fishing industry. The goal is to promote understanding and foster behavioral change towards a nature-positive approach within the company.

Panasonic HD is not new to sustainable food initiatives. Since March 2018, the company has been providing sustainable seafood in its cafeterias. The Sea Vegetable booth at this event highlights the company’s deep commitment to ocean preservation and sustainable food practices.

The booth also features Suji-Aonori — an ingredient that pairs perfectly with hot tempura or as a flavor enhancer for mini udon.

Supporting Marine Biodiversity Through Collaborative Efforts

At the COP15 conference in Montreal, Canada, held in December 2022, countries agreed to protect 30% of the earth's terrestrial, marine, and freshwater ecosystems by 2030. This goal is aligned with the growing emphasis on nature-positive practices. Sea Vegetable is contributing to this effort by engaging in sustainable seaweed farming, in collaboration with fishermen and other local partners. Through initiatives like this partnership with Panasonic HD, Sea Vegetable is working to promote biodiversity and protect marine ecosystems.

Panasonic HD’s commitment to this collaboration underscores the importance of industry partnerships to tackle pressing environmental issues and foster a nature-positive future.
